Central Sensitivity Syndrome: a useful concept that underlies many chronic conditions

Central sensitivity syndrome (CSS) is a condition that affects the way the brain processes sensory information. People with CSS experience increased sensitivity and reactivity to stimuli that would not bother most people. This can result in pain, fatigue, anxiety, migraines, insomnia, brain fog, and other symptoms.

CSS can have various causes and triggers. Some people develop CSS after an infection, exposure to toxins, or trauma. Others have genetic factors that make them more prone to CSS. Sometimes, CSS occurs along with other chronic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia.

Most often in my practice, it is secondary to another trigger. In some cases, this trigger is still present, while in other cases, we are dealing mainly with CSS as the sequelae.

CSS can be challenging to diagnose and treat. There is no specific test or criteria for CSS. We may rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms before considering this as a sole diagnosis.

There are many ways to manage CSS and improve quality of life. Depending on the symptoms and needs of each individual, a combination of medications, supplements, mind-body therapies, breathing techniques, and lifestyle modifications may be helpful.

Medications can help reduce pain and other symptoms of CSS. Some examples are antidepressants, GABA supportive agents, and anti-inflammatories. Supplements can also help support the nervous system and overall health. Some examples are magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, certain amino acids, and coenzyme Q10.

Mind-body therapies can help cope with stress and relax the body and mind. Some examples are meditation, mindfulness, yoga nidra, and relaxation techniques. Breathing techniques can also help calm the nervous system and reduce stress. One simple technique is to exhale longer than you inhale.

Lifestyle modifications can help avoid triggers and improve well-being. Some examples are regular exercise (when tolerated), healthy eating habits, reducing exposure to environmental toxins (such as mold), and getting enough sleep.
