The Pangaea Clinic of Naturopathic Medicine receives its name from the early super-continent, before its break-up into the continents we have today.  Our clinic focuses on achieving quick, powerful results through addressing underlying causes. This can only be achieved by putting the pieces together and looking at the whole.
Pangaea Clinic of Naturopathic Medicine

Dr. Chan has a general naturopathic internal medicine practice. He has post-graduate training and board certifications in chelation therapy, acupuncture, and oxidative medicine. Because of his patient population, he has developed a strong special interest in infectious causes of chronic illness, including lyme and related illnesses. He is a member of the International Lyme and Associated Illnesses Society (ILADS).

Treatment at our clinic focusses on the reversal of chronic disease through aggressive, innovative, and natural treatments that are safe and work with the body to re-establish function.  As an example, a patient with heart disease, even if they are on a wait-list for bypass surgery, may benefit from the chelation program and Plaque-Ex program. Often times, the by-pass can be cancelled altogether.

A baseline work-up for an internal medicine case usually involves a 30-60 minute initial consultation and physical exam, followed by basic and possibly specialized lab testing.  In the cardiovascular example, the lab tests may involve a standard lipid panel and independent risk factors such as homocysteine, hs-CRP, fibrinogen, and insulin.  A referral for ultra-fast CT and calcium scoring may be done for before and after purposes of investigating fatty plaque on the artery walls.  The treatment plan is then decided upon.

Examples of treatments with short summaries are below - mainly for those interested in whether our clinic offers a certain service. More detailed information about our approach can be found in the newsletters that Dr Chan and Dr Ward write, found at the right column.
Chelation therapy and Plaque removal therapy: Chelation is the removal of heavy metals by intravenous and oral treatment. This is often used in combination with essential lipid exchange (plaquex therapy). Chelation is also traditionally used as a slow drip to affect calcium metabolism and remove calcified plaque in the arteries. Our CHELOX program (chezone) is administered by both doctors and is excellent for impaired circulation. Currently there is a $30 million NIH study on this slow chelation, a treatment which we offer in the clinic as part of a  comprehensive heart and vascular program.
Natural and Biological Adjunctive Cancer treatment: Patients with cancer benefit from aggressive, safe, effective natural therapies that help to restore health to the immune system and patient as a whole. Certain therapies can also have a direct effect on the tumor by selective toxicity (properly administered high dose IV vitamin C 75-100 grams over 2-3 hours, intravenous sodium bicarbonate, careseng, ukrain, oral artemisinin) and others strongly stimulate the immune system to attack the cancer (Iscador, ultraviolet blood irradiation, ozone autohemotherapy).
Mesotherapy is the injection of natural medications into the mesoderm layer beneath the skin.  The main effect is the localized removal of fat and cellulite. This procedure is rapidly gaining popularity in the United States and has been featured in numerous magazine and television shows.  It is a technique that is best used for people with "pockets" of fat such as the love handles, or cellulite over the thigh.
Ozone therapy has been very popular in Germany for the treatment of many conditions.  The conditions that respond remarkable well include asthma, arthritis, auto-immune conditions, recurrent and chronic infections, and adjunctively in cancer. The most effective way to administer this therapy is by major autohemotherapy, where about 125 mls of blood is removed, treated, and then administered in the same vein.
Prolozone is a technique developed by Frank Shallenberger MD in Nevada. It involves the use of ozone/oxygen injected into joint cavities (for degenerative arthritis) and into muscle tissue (extremely effective for chronic spasms and muscular tensions (trigger points, myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia).
Iscador or mistletoe injections are used subcutaneously in the treatment of cancer. It strongly stimulates the immune system to attack the tumor. It has recently been popularized by Suzanne Sommers use and description of it in breast cancer.
Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation is also known as photodynamic therapy, photox therapy, photopheresis, and photoilluminescence..It was used in the hospital setting prior to the advent of penicillin. It had a close to 100% success rate in early to moderately advanced infection. In severe cases, when the patient was on the deathbed, it had a success rate close to 50%. It's main use is in the treatment of chronic recurrent infections, chronic fatigue, and asthma. Dr Chan is one of the few naturopathic doctors in Vancouver BC using this effective naturopathic therapy.
Careseng therapy is being studied under the trade name of Ginseng 951, and under Pandimex. It has been found to have relatively equal chemotherapeutic activity as taxol in breast cancer cell lines. It also helps to decrease multi-drug resistance in cancer cells being treated with chemotherapy. It is administered intravenously 2-5 times a week, and usually before and after chemotherapy.
Acupuncture has a long history of use in China for the treatment of pain and internal medical conditions. It is becoming increasingly popular in Vanouver BC. This is an excellent treatment for chronic pain, although some of the other treatments used have faster and longer lasting results. It's use in neuropathies and carpal tunnel syndrome though, is extremely effective.

UKRAIN is a natural chemotherapeutic agent with research in a variety of cancer cell lines. Some of the most impressive research shows that UKRAIN may be effective alone or in combination with gemcitabine in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. We use it in conjunction (immediately after) an ozone and ultraviolet blood irradiation treatment in order to strengthen its effect against cancer cells. It is given 1-2 times a week.
Dr. Ward has a general practice with a special interest in using detoxification and environmental medicine in treating difficult cases.  Dr. Ward's practice focuses on the treatment of allergies, chemical sensitivies, women's hormonal balancing. She also sees pediatric cases. Dr Ward has attained through post-graduate training  board certifications in chelation therapy/heavy metal detoxification, acupuncture, and oxidative medicine.

She has an ND from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and a BSc in biology from Dalhousie University.  She has been trained by the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM/ISCT) for chelation therapy and by International Oxidative Medicine Association for ozone, ultraviolet, and peroxide therapies.  She has been trained in anti-aging by the International Hormone Society.  She has been trained by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, a specialist organization for allergy, detoxification, and environmental sensitivity.

Both are licensed with the College of Naturopathic Physicians of BC, and are members of the BC Naturopathic Association and the Canadian Naturopathic Association.  Both are active committee members on the CNPBC.
Environmental Medicine is a subspecialty of medicine where the focus is on the effects of toxins in the environment on patients. Toxins comprise mainly of allergens, chemical sensitivities, and heavy metal burdens, including mercury. Therapies are then desensitizing therapies, immunotherapies, and detoxification. The term environmentally triggered illnesses is given when the patient's main symptoms are due to underlying toxicities or sensitivities which cause changes in the function of the patient's organ systems. Special attention is paid to naturopathic approaches specific to Vancouver BC environmental problems (mold, allergens, etc). Dr Ward has a special focus in this area.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a very common condition that patients have typically had little success with elsewhere. I have had had excellent results by addressing detoxification, allergies, hormonal imbalances, and especially multiple persistent infections in these patients. Lyme disease is also a condition that closely mimics chronic fatigue syndrome, especially in its chronic stages.
